A reminder of the War of 1812

(OTTAWA) A federal building located in the heart of Old Montreal changed its name to commemorate the War of 1812, the Harper government announced Wednesday.

The building, which previously was called the Customs Building is located at 105 McGill Street, where it overlooks the Place D'Youville. It was built in two phases, from 1912 to 1916 and from 1934 to 1936. Its construction began at a time when three-quarters of Canadian government revenue came from customs duties.

He renamed the building Dominique Ducharme.

Born in 1765 and died in 1853, Dominique Ducharme was a merchant and adventurer soldier who distinguished himself in battle during the War of 1812. At the head of a group of Aboriginal soldiers, he would have played an important role in the Battle of Beaver Dams, Ontario clash won by the British against the Americans.

"It expresses a little history of our country, said Conservative MP Jacques Gourde, who represented the Minister of Public Works Rona Ambrose, the ceremony yesterday. There were Aboriginal, Anglophone, Francophone, and nations worked together against the American invasion. That's what made the foundation of our country. "

Without jeopardizing the value of Dominique Ducharme as historical figure, the New Democratic Party protests against the "dumping" of symbols related to the War of 1812.

"Are they going to release with us in 1812?" Launched MP Pierre Nantel, spokesman for his party's heritage.

According to him, the commemoration of the conflict of 1812 in addition to numerous references to Canada's military past put forward by the Conservative government.

"I see a desire to impose new symbols, imposing new icons Canada, like the symbols that had been built over the years were not enough," says he.

Louis Plamondon, the Bloc Quebecois, draws a parallel between references to the War of 1812 and the symbols of the British monarchy, multiplied by the Harper government.

"Quebecers do not identify at all in this war, he said. It is once again the obsession of the monarchy that is required. "

Jacques Gourde not agree. He explained that each MP has received 30 medals Jubilee to distribute in his constituency. He appealed to his countrymen for Lotbinire-Chutes-de-la-Chaudire, and more than 180 people have expressed an interest.

"It is not necessarily the monarchy is the history of Canada, he said. People feel they can not be impregnated with this story, but they want to know what happened. "

Ottawa also thought to rename a pavilion Royal Military College Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, according to documents obtained by The Press through the Access to Information. Documents from the Department of Public Works pointed out that the building is about thirty kilometers from Lacolle, which hosted an important battle of the War of 1812.

The officer in charge of public affairs of the College, Captain Eric Le Marec, however, said yesterday that no such project is in the pipeline.
